How does the software work:

The captive portal technique forces an HTTP client on a network to see a special web page (usually for authentication purposes) before surfing the Internet normally. Captive portal turns a Web browser into a secure authentication device. This is done by intercepting all packets, regardless of address or port, until the user opens a browser and tries to access the Internet. At that time the browser is redirected to a web page which may require authentication and/or payment, or simply display an acceptable use policy and require the user to agree. Captive portals are often employed at most Wi-Fi hotspots, and it can be used to control wired access (e.g. apartment houses, hotel rooms, business centers, "open" Ethernet jacks) as well. In the hotspot software, all client traffic is redirected using IP redirect on the layer 3 level. The hotspot software is compatible with any make and model Access Point since there is no direct interaction between hotspot software and the access point.


The hotspot software must be installed on the computer which serves as the gateway between wireless clients and the internet. We recommend setting up internet connection sharing (ICS) on this gateway computer.

Software Features:
The Hotspot Software is a captive portal with automated billing and bandwidth metering solution that uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 as a database backend. Microsoft does offer a free version for use with this product. Please visit Microsoft's website for more information regarding Microsoft Server 2005 Express.

Ø       Automated billing control
o        The Hotspot Software will automatically redirect all clients to an webpage requesting to be logged in first. If the user does not have a valid account yet, the client will then be directed to a page where he or she can sign up for an account at your hotspot. The client will then enter his desired username and password after which a pricing can be selected. After this step is complete the client will then be able to pay for the selected pricing plan via credit card. The client signup and access control process is fully automated and controlled by The Hotspot Software.

o        Configuration Wizard (An easy to use and user friendly wizard guides you through the process of setting up The Hotspot Software. Only The Hotspot Software system administrator users can access this wizard.)

§         Network Setup

·         Network interface

o        Specify which network adapter is used to connect wireless clients to your internal network. This adapter is usually connected to your Wireless Access point.

o        You will need two network adapters on your system. One for connection your LAN and one that connects your system to the internet.

·         Auto start listening

o        This option must be selected once your system has been configured properly. This will ensure that when The Hotspot Software starts up, the software will automatically start listening on the selected network adapter. When this option is not selected the software will not authenticate any outgoing network traffic from your wireless clients.

·         IP Address

o        This is the IP address of your network adapter you selected under Network Interface.

·         Max users

o        Specifies the maximum allowed concurrent wireless clients on your hotspot.

·         Inactivity timeout

o        When a wireless client has not been active for the specified amount of minutes he or she will be logged off automatically and will then need to re-authenticate him or herself. This is a security feature.

§         Pricing plans and tax setup

·         Add

o        You can add as many pricing plans as you may want to. There are two types of pricing plans namely:

§         Usage based

·         Usage based packages are based on a preset amount of bandwidth measured in MB (megabytes) available for use.

§         Time based

·         Time based packages uses a preset amount of minutes which are available for use. For time based packages you may also specify a maximum amount of bandwidth to be used within the time period you specify.

o        Download limit

§         Bandwidth shaping. You can limit users with this package to only be able to use this preset amount of available bandwidth on your internet connection. This prevents one or two users from using all available bandwidth and then blocking everyone else.

o        Validity Days

§         The amount of days in which this package will expires. This is only applicable once the user starts using the package.

o        Price

§         How much would you like to charge the wireless clients for this package?

o        VAT

§         You may or may not specify a percentage here. This will be added to the original price.

·         Edit

o        Maintain an existing pricing plan. Changes to a plan here will not affect any users already on this plan. It will only be effective for clients once they purchase it.

·         Delete

o        Delete a plan.

§         System customization

·         Specify a custom logo you wish to use with The Hotspot Software. This logo will be displayed on various parts of the system i.e. Webpages, receipts etc.

·        Fully customisable HTML templates. Create your own look and feel.
 

§         White lists

·         AKA Walled garden. Here you may specify two types of white lists.

o        MAC Address

§         All MAC address specified will be allowed to pass through the hotspot without authentication or buying a pricing plan.

o        Host

§         All wireless clients will be allowed to pass through the hotspot without authentication or buying a pricing plan to the list of host name. i.e. www.Google.co.za etc.

o        From here you will be able to maintain The Hotspot Software users. The Hotspot Software allows for two types of users namely:

§         Administrator

·         Only administrator users will be able to use the configuration wizard and all the options therein.

§         Normal

·         Can perform all functions in The Hotspot Software except access the configuration wizard.

·         Edit

o        Change user’s details, i.e. user names and or passwords.

·         Delete

o        Delete a user from the The Hotspot Software database.
